Icons or text?

Which is better – a graphic icon or text for providing information.?

I think it’s pretty well understood that a good graphic is worth many words (1000 even). However a graphic is not always the best solution.

At Logosauce we have such a quandary. Matt thought a graphic icon for score and comments might work better for the thumbnail views – because it would save space and would allow us to list the number of comments each logo/design has had.

Problem is we already have a lot of graphics on the page (the logos themselves). The result in my view was that the page looked messier and the icons (albeit tiny) were fighting for eyeball attention with the logos/designs themselves.

The advantage of text in this situation is (1) no explanation necessary score means score, (2) no icons to compete with logos and (3) slightly less clutter.

What do you think – would you use icons or text?

So we’ve gone for the text version (for now). Think it works well and look better. :-)
