Logo Display Size and Format

One of the things we wanted to do with this project was to expose the development and decision making process of the project. We hope this will help users understand our logic and the resulting application when it launches.

display size

One of the decisions we’ve just made is regarding the size of the displayed logos. essentially three sizes are required. A thumbnail, a gallery image and a lightbox image.

After some discussion and observation we believe a slightly landscape format/canvas is best (Al Ries states in his book “The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding” that the ideal logo format is a format of 3×1. In fact the vast majority of logos are in fact in landscape format – mainly as a result of most brands being name (word) based.

The second consideration is that we wanted to minimize vertical scrolling on the webpage where logo designs are displayed.

The main problem is that we need to be able to set a standard canvas size that will cater to 95% of logos – not an easy thing to do. Actually we’ve had some experience with this at e-see.com – where we display logos at a 4×3 ratio. We’ve adopted this format which delivers some the following benefits.

  • 4×3 (WxH) – matches standard screen formats of monitors and screens
  • Landscape format close to Al Ries ideal but also allows for Portrait formats
  • Vertically efficient to reduce need for vertical scroll
  • Lightbox format at 640×480px
  • Gallery format at 320×240px
  • Thumbnail format at 112×84px

So now that we have settled on that format (we spent some time debating the format – we also looked at a square format and a 2×1 and 3×1 format), we are now turning our attention to how we assist designers/users to publish a logo image to the site.
