What to Upload at LogoSauce

Now that we’ve decided on the image sizes to be displayed on the site – we had to think about how we ask users to upload their logo designs.

OR

Because we’ve decided on a lightbox image size of 640×480 – we’re going to need at least that size uploaded.

When uploaded the application will create 3 resized versions of the logo (Thumb, Gallery and Lightbox) constraining the image to which ever dimension is appropriate (and then discard the uploaded source file).

For Example: a 800 × 100 pixel source image will be constrained to 640px wide and a 100×800px image will be constrained to 480px high.

Secondly, we will display the image on a white canvas with a white border (or padding) and align the image top right within that canvas.

Therefore to get your logo looking perfect, taking into account isolation and background colours – the user will have to upload their logo image complete with a canvas of the appropriate format/size.(ideally 640 × 480px).

So if a user wants a red background – he/she will have to create a 640×480 canvas, place the logo image on the canvas and create the right colour background and save as 640×480 jpg, gif or png. (note gif is often preferred for logos)

This will be no problem for designers or graphics professionals but hard for a brand or marketing manager wishing to upload their logo.

For users without the knowledge or tools to create a canvas and resize an image – the application will automatically constrain whatever is uploaded to the max height or width depending on orientation and place at the top right of the white canvas on the site.

This is not a perfect solution and may result in some logos looking a bit thrown on the page – particularly if the logo image uploaded has no isolation area. Hence the addittion of white padding (of 10px) to the on gallery screen canvas – to give the effect of a border.

So we are considering whether we create a mandatory white canvas of 320×240 that always displays in the gallery view whether or not the logo oriented landscape or portrait. In which case we would centre the uploaded logo on the canvas.
