We're back. Happy New Year

That went fast. Holiday over. 2008 is here and now.

We’re rested and raring to go. What better way to start the year than with this great unsolicited testimonial I received via email today from client, Keith in the US. Check it out.

Hello David.
...
By the way, I would also like to add that my colleagues and I have been absolutely blown away by the quality of work on LogoSauce. We have been talking up the site with many friends and colleagues, and in fact will use it again to rebrand one of our sister companies.

If you are ever seeking testimonials from satisfied customers, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I will relate to you that unfortunately, prior to discovering LogoSauce, we were taken in by a “designer” who charged us thousands of dollars to produce work that can charitably only be described as “crap.” Seriously, their “design” work amounted to little more than varying fonts, colors, etc. Any middle-school child with a rudimentary grasp of computers could have done what they did.

The difference between their work and the work of virtually all the designers on LogoSauce (especially Toon’s) is the difference between a broken-down, rusty old moped and a shiny new Ferrari 599GTB. Even if you’re not a fan of cars, I think you catch my drift.

LOGOSAUCE is the best!

Best wishes, a very satisfied client in the US

Glad to see people are happy with the way things are going, maybe we could think about changing the minimum payment value to $200 to try and re-value some of the work being produced by all the designers here, it’s still a very reasonable price to have 20-50 designers working on one project?

Could be something to think about for the new year.

By onesummer over 8 months ago

I agree with Toon on bumping up the min. to $200.

By +java over 8 months ago

I concur :) its a really reasonable 200 theres a lot of talent here.

By tb1alexc over 8 months ago

good idea, but just wondering, if a charity wants a logo, do they have to pay? or could we do it as a gift, seeing as it would be for a chaiity?

By onesummer over 8 months ago

@Digger, I hope you really consider bumping up the min. prize amount, as it seems like more and more comp’s lately are only doing $100…I hardly even want to enter them because the amount is so low.

Oh and please, please, set a maximum for the length of competitions..like 2 weeks, 3 at worst. these month long plus competitions are just ridiculous.

By Digger over 8 months ago

I agree with lifting the prize money to US$200 – will probably mean fewer comps – but I’ve been pleasantly surprised before – so we’ll see – we can always go back right!

With regard to length – I think this is trickier – there are lot of other dynamics going on with the clients business/life and there may be reasons for the timeframe. That said I think it’s fairly obvious that the span of attention suffers in longer competitions and once an initial design is done – you want to move on. We’ll encourage reasonable time frames – but don’t think setting a fixed length makes sense.

p.s some of you guys I note are also participating on Logopond. I’m not knocking them at all and I like some of their features. Is there anything you like about Logopond that you’d like to see here?

By tb1alexc over 8 months ago

is there any way to have an alert system for private competitions? because otherwise you don’t know if you’ve simply lost or if the competition owner hasn’t decided yet.

Maybe in an e-mail? I dunno. Just so that you know that someone has won

By andre / endhiq over 7 months ago

agree with onesummer about lenght competition. I think CH better hold have competition for one week and then extends again for one week again after.Better than hold competition for 2 week directly.I think some of designers here work and submitt his works in the last days due to dealine.

Also about announcement of winner must be decided by CH max 2 week after and if he/she can’t at least gives some feedback/ news for designer. Maybe this can’t do for private but i think the link for competition for private should not lost before the competition winner announced.

I’m new here but have been doing the contest thing at another Site and there is a pretty broad range of prize amounts. It is my tendency not to enter those at the lower end as I take it to be somewhat disrespectfull to such a talented pool of designers as are there and here seems to be no different – the talent to reward ratio definitely needs looking into. Also, I agree that there needs to be some way of knowing that a contest holder has chosen a winner and not possibly just walked away. One more item for my shopping list: I would like it very much if there was an slightly enlarged view upon rolling over of a thumbnail. Cheers to everyone and thanks heaps to the Logosauce staff – you’ve done a great thing here! RetroMetro/Steve

@Digger: Here are my views/suggestions,

1. Obviously agree about increasing the prize amount to US$200. :)

2. Also agree (ander) on 1-week contest (+1-week extension) and 1-week for CH to decide the winner (in case of no response with no update, freezing the prize amount and using it to pay the best logo competition every year!)

3. Agree (Retro) on enlarged tip view.

4. Keep tomatos for CH and sepeate the rating from it for others (btw, it is not working properly; just counts a rating on view).

5. How about adding a flash porfolio option (similar to @finalcrit)?

6. Add uploaded time option (which should update when the logo is updated!).

7. Make comments count visible in the competition window.

Thank you for reading, and feel free to contact me for any clarifications.

I can understnd that some clietns may need a quick and dirty logo and only wish to spend $100. If this is the case, why not have a time limit depending on prize. For example, a $100 win has a 7 day comp length. A $200 win has a 2 week comp length. The higher the prize = the longer the comp = the more entries. Just a thought.

By EmLiam over 7 months ago

Nice thought; just a few hours ago I got the same idea. :)

By andre / endhiq over 7 months ago

Agree with EmLiam about abandoned competitions.CH should think “their time” first before they decide to hold competitions in here, If they don’t have time to give feedback, don’t hold the competition. Also if CH don’t give response or feedback for maybe max 1 month after comp. closed, Let LS keeps the prize and CH don’t have right to choose anymore. I think the prize would be better for LS development or to hold LScommunity contest maybe.:)

@Digger: Another new concept coming up from sitepoint (becoming 99designs) of shortlisting and compulsorily selecting winner or distributing the amount among shortlisted; looks good, check it out.

By hendrei over 7 months ago

i agree with digger about the time frame…and about the prize amount increase of toon suggestion well thats great! how about those contest here in logosauce that seems to be abandoned…how would we know if it is really abandoned and the client stop choosing a winner? its really frustrating waiting for the results specially if its from the 19th century…

By Digger over 7 months ago

Yeh I hear you on the competition holders not selecting a winner.

Kinda stupid as they’ve already paid the money up front (in most cases anyway – earlier comps did not have to).

I’m not keen on fixing dates or timeframes for comps – however will consider it. I still want to keep the rules simple. Too many rules and restrictions just turns people (an me ) off.

Just remember that we WANT competitions so we can participate, right?. So it’s a careful balance in pleasing designers and attracting potential clients. Obviously the quality of the design and talent on show is the most important element BUT we also need to keep in mind that we want it to be attractive to potential competiton founders.

By Digger over 7 months ago

Also think it’s a good idea to show private comps until a Winner is picked. So I’ll get that changed.

We’re also going to work on Automated payment of prize money.

I know that lots of you are concerned about delays – but we just can’t keep up with workload and it’s messy and fiddly trying to get confirmations from both client and designer.

So I’m proposing that upon selection as a winner the designer is invited to upload source artwork to Logosauce (which enables us to confirm delivery), the client is notified of delivery of the files and we then automatically initiate payment 7 days after upload.

The client will have 7 days to make a complaint about artwork being inadequate. If there is a complaint Logosauce will be able to check artwork and arbitrate in the matter if required.

@Digger, sounds pretty good to me. FYI, logopond is not a contest site, it’s solely for inspiration and getting quality feedback from other ‘designers’. but feel free to pick up tips based on the structure of their site though ;) I like the fact that they have a forum…

I also participate on other contest sites, and, I disagree with EmLiam on the comments of doing certain things like the sitepoint website. It’s such a free for fall there and often seems ‘designers’ just mass manufacture (as I like to call it) logos ,entering tons, instead of taking the time to enter just a couple of Quality entries. Now ALOT of people from that site have come over to logosauce, and it’s becoming the same thing; more quantity rather than quality. not sure there is much one can do about it, but thought i’d just mention it to get it out there.

and we all need to keep in mind that Digger and his crew (heh, do you have a crew?) are providing and maintaining logosauce.com with absolutely no cost to us. so thanks to Digger.

By andre / endhiq over 7 months ago

One of feature from Logopond that i want to see here is we can manage our comments.

By Cwilk over 7 months ago

Digger, you mention payment to the winners….and I think I understand that you’ve become so busy that it’s been difficult to keep up with a few things (including payments). I’ve tried emailing you and haven’t heard back. I guess I can assume you’re confirming with the client that I actually delivered the files. Right now, how long does payment normally take?
