Simplicity rules
I like simplicity. I know simplicity makes sense in a noisy world. I know less words is better than more. I know that we are surrounded by clutter that saps energy and focus. I know the things I like best are beautifully simple and achieve their purpose with the least amount of fuss. Simple is good.
So it’s nice to be reminded that this is not new and is well understood. It helps me to justify the effort that goes into simplifying, reducing, focussing our products and services and to resist adding complication.
Have you seen these quotes before?
- “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”—Leonardo da Vinci
- “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.”—Albert Einstein
- “Beauty of style and harmony and grace and good rhythm depend on simplicity.”—Plato
- “Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity!”—Henry David Thoreau
Furthermore this ties into what we already know as one of the immutable laws of branding. Focus. From focus come power. In branding and design that means picking a message, visual or conceptual and sticking to it.
It’s worth remembering each time we design that saying ‘No’ to variation, extension, addittions and ‘noise’ can be very powerful.

“…achieving simplicity is deceptively complex because it is a thoughtful process.” To achieve our goal of simplicity often takes many runs at the problem, from a variety of directions, and then a distillation of elements and a paring down, both conceptually and visually. It’s not always easy, usually takes time, and is often a collaborative effort. That’s why I enjoy Logosauce so much – contests typically run long enough to allow time for the process and the community is largely positive and helpful. Cheers to all.
Yeh simple is hard work. :-)
hmm Simple is hard work, hard work is hard work..so whats simple?
just a question.
He Dig, just to say that search doesn’t seem to be working, I’m getting a Server Internal Error (500)
Yes, the index file seems to be gone – I tried searches under the “profiles” tab and got nothing yet the page number tabs at the bottom of the “profiles” page seem to be in order.
Fixed.
It’s down again…
Yeah… and the ‘Sort by > Score’ has gone…?
Sorting by Score has been removed temporarily as it was slowing site performance severely. It will be back in the new version. Hope we can all live with that for now. :-)

Often a test of a good logo design is whether it works in B&W. With just one colour the design is reduced to it’s most simple essence. We always use the B&W test before considering a logo.
