I’ve just been looking at the site of this well known US designer and stumbled across this old video interview with Steve Jobs (you know the Apple guy), talking about Paul Rand who died in 1996.
Paul Rand has created some very well known brand identities and was influential in a number of areas.

I loved the comment that Steve makes about Paul being a business problem solver first and an artist second. That really felt in sync with the way I think about design and function over form.
I also loved the comment that Steve makes about the idea of the logo being a “jewel” that can be applied to products. Thought that was a great way of describing a logo.
So all you designers are also the “Jewellers” of the web/media in a graphic sense. Just think of all those wonderful icons that you’ve seen. The good ones are not only functional and descriptive but are definitely like precious jewels.

I think capturing the right "emotion"or “feel” is not only key but one of the most difficult things to do in developing a successful mark. Paul always seemed to pull that off effortlessly in his work. I particularly love the part where Paul tells Steve that he will solve his problem with one option…thats confidence…lol.
suprise, suprise… nice to read here about Paul Rand – it´s so joyless that this modern futurist dosn´t got more influence on the way how to design logograms and think about CD/ CI in this centry – away from the Gutenberg-Galaxis. every of his timeless signs that remain should be untouchable as beacon against the sruppid zeitgeist in this decade.

Hi Dreamer 7-14 days is normal. Prize money is paid to several winners in batches to save admin time. It’s better than what you’ll get from most commercial clients. :-)
