The LogoSauce Blog
New servers, better speed :-)
Hi folks
Well we finally got fed up with our dreadful site performance and have started to make major changes to the site code and infrastructure.
Starting today we’ve moved our site over to Slicehost . Slicehost is regarded as top notch host for Rails sites. We’re also about to start a complete re-write of the code-base to fix some fundamental performance related issues.
In the mean-time we’ve made some quick changes to get things moving faster.
- Fixed the recent views on the home page (finally)
- Improved performance by caching the scores and statistics
- Changed from Apache to Lightly (web server)
- Fixed a small rounding issue in total profile score
So that’s the quick fix.
With the fuller re-write we’re going to really make things fly (Ruitao promises!) – and also going to add some new interesting features over the next 2-3 weeks.
Hope you appreciate the improvements – more to come and sorry it’s taken so long to get sorted.
p.s Ruitao is a new developer we’ve brought in to help out. He’s a huge Ruby on Rails fan and had plenty of Rails experience.

Ahhhh – that’s better!! Feels like I can braeth again. Thanks a bunch Digger and crew for improving the Logosauce experience. About the anticipated new features – I’m really hoping for tip-overs of the thumbnail views – maybe something like 3x size… Also, an indication of direct feedbacks on the overview page of a contest? All the best, and thanks again for all yor hard work on our behalf. RetroMetro/Steve.
Your total tables aren’t adding up, my points have been stuck at 24470 since the update and I’ve added 2 new logos that already have 6 points between them and the total is still stuck, I would say the database isn’t updating correctly.
very nice, page is much faster now! it was horrible before. Perfect timing for my competition :-)
Totals seem to have caught up ok now
I’m in Heaven!!!
Great job Digger and co., now I can finally come back to Logosauce! The old site performance really did suck, and I had a whole bunch of errors. Now it’s amazing! Keep up the great work!
Alex
Just noticed the Recently Viewed logos is throwing up lots of really old logos. We’re putting this down to the search-bots reindexing the site after the move. Should settle down in a few days time.
nice job on the site’s speed. @Digger, And thanks for the free logosauce bottle and t shirt.
p.s would help if everyone uploaded the correct size files. Someone yesterday uploaded an image that was 8094 × 1454px! (that’s pretty darned big) This tied up a server instance repurposing the image back down to 640px. Slowing the site for everyone.
You should be uploading a 640px x 480px canvas/image at 72dpi.
Thank You! I almost gave up on this site, it is one of my favorites but just impossible to navigate. But now I click on anything, and it loads! Thanks again!
Great improvement!!
waaaaay!!! :D
is very, very, very happy! :-D
Congrats
That’s great Digger.:).Thanks!
Great job. We feel the change :)
it is amazing what one simple difference can make :), nice job
Wow Digger, really liking the improvements.Hope you don’t mind but I have a couple of suggestions that could make the site more user friendly
1. Bigger thumbnails on the homepage like RetroMetro/Steve mentioned would be cool as an old boy like me is getting a bit vision impaired;)
2. Being able to see what designs have feedback from its thumbnail would be like an early Christmas
3. Finally being able to subscribe to projects to receive email updates on feedback and so I can stalk…I mean watch said projects.
Cheers Fabian
Hi Fabs 1.Bigger thumbnail = fewer thumbnails on the home page – click to view larger thumbnails 2. Thumbnails include a score and number of comments (home page) already (except competition pages) or did you mean on competition pages? 3. Agree – subscribe to an RSS feed for comps is a good idea that we will implement.
Hey Digger,
Yes I meant the comp pages. Not really into the whole RSS thing yet…maybe I need to get with the times, I like the simple email subscription.
Hey Digger,
I really love this site but its so not user friendly at the moment. It’s just so time consuming clicking on each entry to see if the client has given feedback or not.
What are the chances of getting a how many comments number add below each competition entry?
Cheers Fabian

Nice, im glad the site will be running alot better and smoother and i wish logo sauce a great future.
