The LogoSauce Blog
Logosauce re-write question 1
OK so we’re part the way through the re-write and looking at a number of changes. I want to throw out some questions to users and hopefully we’ll get some reasoned and sensible answers.
I’ll do this over a few blog posts. Try to keep to the topic – I know that you many of you have lots of ideas, but I’ll dedicate a blog post to a free for all in the next few days.
Also note: No promises – we already have a good idea of what we’re gonna change and add (after previous feedback). So while you may wish for a feature – and we’ll entertain ideas – don’t be disappointed if we don’t act on yours.
First Up – thumbnail size.
Logosauce is probably unique amongst logo sites in having quite small thumbnails with larger ones available after click through.
The benefit of this is that we can display more logos on a page and reduce load times. In addition click-throughs increase views and scores for each logo (and exposure for the designer).
The disadvantage is that the user needs to click through to really see a decent view of a design.
Most similar logo inspiration sites use larger thumbnails initially. Some combine smaller images with mouse-over previews.
So what do you think?
Larger initial thumbnails with fewer logos displayed on each page OR longer scrollable pages with slower load times.

Comments:
While its fine to click the logo i dont like ones that pop over the page and dim the background so then i have to click again to get back.
Ive seen sites that do mouseover boxes that dont steal focus away and you dont have to click anywhere to get back to the page, could you not do something like that when the mouseover it pops up then mouse out of the image it dissapears automatically?
Love the way it currently is. Also, I respectfully disagree with ArcticFox, the lightbox pop-ups are fantastic. Love the diversity of opinion! Just please lighten up the colors of the site, so dreary. Sorry to go off topic!
Good luck with the refresh. Matthew Brian
I love the site as it is!!!
I like things as they with the preview sizes but would like to be able to see all the entries on the same page and be able to sort them by popularity, date or comments for example. Also with them all on the same page it’s easier to see your new creation isn’t anything like a previous entry, I like to be original with my competition entries.
Digger, I love this site (when it loads properly and speeds along). I like the small thumbnails and large click-through views. The large view I feel is essential to get a sense of the quality of workmanship and usefulness at larger size. And the small view does give a sense of scalability. I would like an intermediate-sized rollover view, though. It would likely reduce server load and improve speed and also, clicking through further to the large size will more accurately reflect real interest in a design rather than simply not having been able to see a small thumbnail of a design that, say, had a lot of whitespace around it. Anyway, I’m excited to see what you have in store for us and can’t thank you enough for this designer-centric site! Cheers, RetroMetro/Steve.
SergioUrra — we’re actually going to move to a more open tagghing format instead of forcing users to select from standard tags. Although I’m a little concernd that “lazy” designers are going to end up not tagging there assets at all.
I think it’s important with thousands of logos in the library that some sort of tag/label is required on every design. Si If I’m searching for a logo featuring an eagle I can find them – but only if the designer has tagged it “eagle”.
SergioUrra – so who do you trust for payments in Brazil?
Re: “In addition click-throughs increase views and scores for each logo (and exposure for the designer).”
What about removing the scoring from the click-through and re-instating it on displaying the full sized 640×480 image. Quite often I’ll click through to see a logo because it is too small to discern in the thumbnail, only to be disappointed with it. I sometimes wonder if some designers submit tiny logos to encourage click-throughs, hence improving scores.
Do we need both ‘views’ and ‘scores’? One seems to be a factor of the other, that is the scores appear to be largely calculated from the number of views (and to a lesser extent voting). Perhaps more weighting can be given to voting when calculating scores. This may encourage more members to vote. What about scoring out of five or ten?
Some people get upset when voted down to one tomato (reducing their score). My preference is simply to ignore a poor design, rather than destroying a young designer’s confidence or incurring the designer’s wrath by voting it down. This negative aspect of the voting system could be removed.
Cheers
Chris
I heartily agree with Chris: if you’ve something positive to say – say it. If you’ve something constructive to say – say it. If you’ve something negative to say – lock yourself in a closet somewhere, get it off your chest, and don’t come out until you’re ready to be civil. I’ve no use whatsoever for the single tomato thing…
Sorry for the off-topic rant.
Ok so seems like points for views is not popular and thet we want more reliance on actual votes with say a score out of 5 or drop the negative points of a 1 bottle.
However we have to resolve the issue where many users don’t vote, don’t comment either. There are a lot of views from non registered users who can’t vote. Do we care or should we allow non-users to vote (but not comment)?
What about instead of the tomato thing, you just have a “Click to appreciate” Button like on behance? I really like that system. And yes, I do think non-registered visitors should be able to vote. Also, maybe you should make tags mandatory, so that you can’t click submit until you put in a few.
My only other problem is that people seem to saturate contests with a million logos with very little difference in them. I think if submissions were restricted for comps that people would take a little more time to read briefs and submit a logo that is really good and that has a little more effort put into it. Maybe if the contest holder doesn’t like a logo the designer can choose to retract it and try again. Does anyone else think this? It might over complicate things but I just thought I’d throw it out there :P
I love the layout of this site, keep it!! I’m happy with the lightbox viewer, and I’m happy with how everything else around here works. Good job :D
Yeah Jonze – maybe the sauce bottles are a little misleading. Actually one bottle is a negative vote(I don’t like this = reduces points), two is neutral (it’s ok but not special – zero effect on points) and 3 bottles (i like this – increases points).
We originally had up/down arrows/thumbs for the 1 and 3 bottles. Maybe we’ll relook at that.
It might increase membership if you had to sign up to vote or comment. It would certainly enhance accountability. Another powerful tool is the thumbs-up/down attached to comments made. With a few exceptions, we’ve a pretty level-headed bunch of people here. That community could be brought to bear if a commentor’s remarks were attached to their overall score. ie., make a self-serving/mean-spirited remark – lose some points when the community gives you some thumbs-down. That method of ‘policing’ is community based, automatic, timely, and requires little intervention on the part of modys., freeing up valuable time for other things.
Well you already have to signup to vote/comment.
Steve – you mean vote on comments as well as logos. Could work but the risk is taking attention away from the designs. Wouldn’t it encourage flame wars?
I thought rather the opposite – if there were a tangible cost/benefit factor associated with one’s remarks, then I think most people would think twice before pressing the ‘Add comment’ button.
yeh maybe – will consider it. kinda digg like ? I guess.
