Logos For Sale?
iStockPhoto recently announced they intend to sell logos in the near future.
See this article at CreativePro
We’ve considered having a For Sale section on the new Logosauce. However our intention would be a more hands-off approach to let the designer set the price and charge what they like. Logosauce would charge a 10% commission on the sale (rather than iStockPhoto’s 50%).
What do you think? Would you use the service for unsold designs? (might be a great way to reuse designs made for competition entries).
Do you want it?

I’m not sure how this is going to work… I mean: aren’t good logos… and I mean GOOD logos … specially made for a certain predefined purpose and for a clearly defined company/name?!… it’s a tailormade design! You cannot easily change the name and you’re done! This is ridiculous. IMO we don’t need a “for sale section”.
Yes!! I think is a very good idea!
I don’t know about this idea. It’s up to you. One thing, I will never use or touch a button “for sale”. Of course, never say never, who knows.
Nice idea, like it, because too many logos done so far and not be chosen ! its good for client/designers, lol well need some luck :D so your logo wins ! but i can say, its realy good idea. Paece.
Hey guys, Ruitao has built the functionality in v2 already today. I’ve now got to review, add design and layout. So you should see something when we launch v2 (soon).
id be intrested in this because that way id be able to earn some money and build up my portfolio as im not have much luck on the competitions, :) hopefully, if i understand correctly.
Digger I have a suggestion. I welcome ‘for sale’ section. But what is the duration of the design that will stay in that section. If no one is interested in that design, you should remove the entry after some time say for 60 days so that it will give sort of room for further fresh creativity. Also in the present site, can you display the name of the designer below the design as well as in the proposed for sale section. Thank you
@KamleshStudio – designer name coming. Not sure about duration – there will be a natural attrition as new logos are uploaded (or updated)
I think its an excellent idea, how many logos are designed by us that just sit in our computers with no use. I think that the client decides if she/he wants a predesigned logo or a personalized logo, in my opinion what’s going to change is the price obviously buying a predesigned logo is not going to cost the same as a custom one. Anxious to see the new site = ). Cheers, Santi.
Think that always is good to try if the opportunities are look with good expectatives…. I wished to see some movement on this web site regarding news since I think it’s the best platform for professional designers… good job Digger
good idea and i have a lot of logos for sell :P
SORRY BAD IDEA….. it will weaken these logo comp sites as istock will probably be cheaper. There are already enough ‘one stop shops’ offering a logo and stationery for $100! it de-values what we do! and its not healthy for the future of design.
I also think LS should up the minimum fee to $300 so you can retain good designers and stop them wondering off to 99 designs or logo tournament where the prizes are bigger! cheers Ryu
@RYU – good points as usual. We have a plan to raise the average fees. We just need to get the new app done and released.
If we do this would a minimum fee for outright purchase be instigated? Would that make a difference?
yes, i think it would make the difference.. the minimum comp fee would be also the minimum buying fee for existing logo’s.. though this may be down to the seller and buyer. Im just worried one day that a logo/brand would cost the same as a loaf of bread!! : )
when is the new site being launched? R
when will V2 launch? i dont want to see something like network edge contest again and again and again and again x 100 times
I’ll catch hell for saying this, but it seems to me there is a potential revenue stream here for Logosauce too – I’m thinking that designers could pay a small fee to upload pre-designed logos for a specified period of time (kinda like renting space/time on the server). This might be a built in vetting mechanism whereby a designer will be inclined to only post quality designs with a likelihood of selling within the alloted time. Alternatively, any potential transaction could still be handled by Logosauce with appropriate commisions taken. My two main concers are that it needs to be a win-win-win for buyer-seller-site and that and it must not ultimately devalue the competition side of things.
I guess another worry is that having a whole lot of designs to browse through will encourage ‘inspired’ mimicry on the part of those browsing. I guess access to the pre-designed category would somehow have to be limited to ‘qualified’ buyers – pay a fee, get a peek, strike a deal, pay the commision. I’m not even sure designers need access to any but their own designs…
mm interesting idea steve.. but not sure..
i was also wondering if the 4 pages of undecided contests are going to get sorted too?
@RYU – no way of sorting this other than asking the client to pick a winner. We’ll be getting harder on this and forfeiting prize-money 14days after close if no winner selected. We’re working on a scheme that will then redistribute that value to participants.designers. Stay tuned.
@RetroMetroSteve The ability to sell logos will be restricted to a certain class of users. Can’t tell you more just yet. All will be revealed in due course. Yes there is a revenue stream – we’ll take 10% of the sale value – but are you suggesting we charge a listing fee?
I guess that’s the idea, though putting it just so brings to mind on-line auction sites and such. I’m worried that free listings will just encourage a whole lot of schlock. I’m of the opinion that even so-called pre-designed logos ought to be of high calibre – especially here on Logosauce;)
Schlock! lol … i haven’t heard of that one! lol yes but totally agree… if its free to upload what you like.. then there will be masses of rubbish… and also you will find people wont ask for competitions as they can buy something straight away.. another reason i think its not going to work.. sorry to be a bit negative, but its to protect this great site and not become e-logo-bay!!
Yeah, you should do it…!
Yeah, that’s a great idea. Sometimes we design something not particularly for someone and it remains in our computer for eternity without any use. May be some else could use it as a logo of his / her company. Another thing is also keep different sections like – photographs etc. Though this site is all about logos, but I think photos etc will also be good.
@Dark Glow ;-)
yeah and maybe change the name of the site to wedding logos….. or wedding photography logos…same same same designs in every comp…. i wonder how much you would sell the logos for i mean for a measly $200 the client can get 100 logos to pick from and throw in there a request for stationary and busi cards
It’s been done! It’s called Brandstack. Is that what you’re after?
i think this site should go back to designing logo’s and logo’s only…. no extras of stationery etc.. and should be a new rule… the comp holders think its apart of the job now.. and expect the files with the logo too… so i think its time to stop de-valueing our work on the logo and go back to basics of having logo’s only… any other opinions are very welcome.. i’d be interested to see what others think… we should have confidence in the logo and not need to show it on other items… have great day! Ryan
i like the idea of for sale but is there a section where you can view the items that are up for sale. it looks like you sell it and thats it there is no special page where the sales are displayed. thanks
god idea

Well it would be a great idea to have that option as many many designs created go unselected. Thanks Vanimator
