Logosauce rewrite Question 4 - Scoring

After reading a lot of feedback over some time, it seems obvious that many users are unhappy with the number of views a logo receives as counting towards a logo’s score. I also know that many new users misunderstand the scoring when they first join – so we’re going to make a change.

This is what we’re planning.

Views have no impact on score BUT will be counted as views and will be used to rank logos by Popularity.

We’re going to keep the 3 bottles rather go for 5 or 10, partly so that all the existing votes make sense and partly for simplicity. However, we’re going to change the scoring rate a wee bit.

  • 1 Bottle = 1 point
  • 2 Bottle = 2 points
  • 3 Bottles = 3 points

Competition Win = 100 points (no change)

Simple and intuitive. No negative points – so you can negatively score a design. You can always elect to give a no vote.

In addition we’re going to 2 new features that will allow qualified users to give higher scores for each vote. I’m a little wary of all the copycat logo sites out there so I’m gonna keep that to myself for now. More later.

I know that many have been calling for points per view to be dropped – so we’re gonna do that but keep a tally for popularity. I think this makes sense and should work well.

Let us know what you think?

Almost there. I’d just rank them by ‘views’ rather than popularity. Popularity implies that the logos are popular in the sense that a lot of people like them. I often look at logos because they have comments to see what the competition holder has written or because they are too small to discern in the thumbnail. This doesn’t mean that I like them. If other people’s behaviour is similar, then this will distort the ranking by popularity whereas simply ranking by ‘views’ doesn’t imply any such bias.

You could measure popularity by requiring each viewer to rank the logo according to whether they like it, are neutral in their opinion (default option), or don’t like it. As with scoring, the viewer’s IP address would have to be recorded to prevent viewers from multiple attempts to push popularity up or down. Unlike scoring, popularity would have to be anonymous and open to everyone, not just members.

This would give us three ways to rank logos: (1) Views – unbiased (2) Popularity – open to all, anonymous and unaffected by the default choice. (3) Score – open to members only, providing a measure of professional/peer feedback.

Hope this makes sense.

@Chris Good ideas but I think Views plus Popularity is getting too complex for no real gain. Views = Popularity (not a rating of quality). I don’t see any difference between the two.

Sounds good, but what are the bottles? You mean tomatoes?

edit: never mind, I just noticed that the logo is a bottle shaped like a tomato, I have never noticed that till now.

@blacklab LOL yeh we have these neat kitch plastic bottles (http://productsfromnz.com/browse_2599) here in NZ for tomatoe sauce and that was the inspiration for the logo and brand.

Soy nuevo en la página, pero me parece muy bien la manera en la que manejan los votos y todo.
