The LogoSauce Logo

Inspiration comes from odd places.

In creating LogoSauce we of course had to come up with an initial logo design. When we settled on the brand name we had a vision of chilli sauce bottles or perhaps a ketchup bottle as a graphic device. Read more…

What to Upload at LogoSauce

Now that we’ve decided on the image sizes to be displayed on the site – we had to think about how we ask users to upload their logo designs.

OR

preview 320 x 240px

Because we’ve decided on a lightbox image size of 640×480 – we’re going to need at least that size uploaded. Read more…

Less is more

One of the underlying tenants that we are applying to this Project is the concept of less is more.

What this means for the project is that we are staying focussed and saying “no to features” that aren’t absolutely necessary. And when a feature is necessary but perhaps complex or optional then we are working to hide that function until it’s needed.

Focus is hard. Read more…

No Tag Cloud!

As we were designing LogoSauce we were sure we wanted some sort of tagging capability.

This is obvious for a site that is based on a community of users adding content. Tags are an obvious and standard way these days for categorizing information for later retrieval.

tag cloud as seen on del.icio.us.com

Most web 2.0 sites that you look at include some form of tagging. Read more…

The problem with Brands of the World and others

If you’re looking for a listing of logos with possible access to artwork, there are a couple of relatively popular sites you can look at.

  1. Wikipedia’s brand of the world page
  2. brandsoftheworld.com

The problem with these sites is that the listing are not necessarily endorsed by the owner of the brand, nor are they necessarily up to date. Read more…

Logo Display Size and Format

One of the things we wanted to do with this project was to expose the development and decision making process of the project. We hope this will help users understand our logic and the resulting application when it launches.

display size

One of the decisions we’ve just made is regarding the size of the displayed logos. essentially three sizes are required. A thumbnail, a gallery image and a lightbox image. Read more…

Tag Clouds Revisted

We recently announced in a previous post that we were not going to do a “tag cloud”.

However we are reconsidering this. A tag cloud could be interesting for users and visitors in getting a quick view of what user tags users are publishing logos with.

What do you think : Do you want a Tag Cloud ? Read more…

Icons or text?

Which is better – a graphic icon or text for providing information.

Web 2 Logos

There’s a lot of talk around the web and now in mainstream press about Web 2.0.

There’s also a lot of talk about a Web 2.0 bubble and lots of money and development effort pouring into Web 2.0 initiatives.

There is a lot going on. So we thought it would be really interesting to have a look at Web 2.0 logos across a wide range of brands/websites. Some well known ones like YouTube and some lesser known names like Riffs . Read more…

A spike! Where did that come from?

Amazing what a simple mention in someone elses site can do to your web traffic.

This morning we arrived at the office to see a whole bunch of new logos published and a bunch of new profiles. Always a pleasant experience.

Google Analytics Spike

When we checked our Google Analytics we can see a big spike (well big for us anyway) in traffic and page views. What-do-ya-know a new referring site has popped out of the woodwork. 32% of yesterdays traffic was from a site called Webcreme.

Webcreme is a site that shows other website designs as a source of inspiration featured Logosauce on it’s home page yesterday. Read more…

Improving quality with Kharma

We recently disabled our first member for comment abuse.

Unfortunately there is a not a lot we can do about this sort of abuse other than respond to complaints from fellow members.

We’d rather not disable member accounts – but let the community work it out – however we also want to look after our regulars who are doing good work. Read more…

New look for LogoSauce!

Hey folks

We’ve been thinking about a new look for LogoSauce. Here’s why and a look at a one concept.

I think it’s time for a fresh new look, that works across browsers better and has more impact.

1. Our CSS curved boxes are not reliable across al browsers (I.E stand up please) 2. Top of the page looks a little messy (in out view) 3. Logo a bit weak. 4. We’d like to see designs stand out more on the page. 5. Thinking the score and text elements under the thumbnails detract a bit.

What do you think? We want your feedback. Click through to see the screens! Read more…

Off to webstock

We’re off to the Webstock conference in Wellington, NZ this week.

Actually I’m already in Wellington for a couple of meeting before the conference proper begins on Thursday at the Wellington Town Hall. There are some brilliant speakers lined up and I’m really looking forward to Thursday morning.

If you’re going to be there yourself it would be great to catch up and have a chat in person. I hope to do the same with the Campaign Monitor folk who are over from Sydney and hopefully a bunch of other folk. Read more…

No-spec vs Spec

Dear Logosauce Users

A user has decided to use her profile make a political stand with regard to No-Spec. No-Spec is a cause promoted by AIGA to encourage designers not to compete in design competitions.

I could delete her profile or remove her comments – however I’m fair minded enough to let her express an opinion provided she can accept that others have a different view. So her profile remains provided it remains fair.

I believe there is a time and place for everything. Competitions are not meant to replace the designer pitching process. Instead they should be seen as a complimentary way to raise a designers profile, meet new clients and more. Read more…
