Identity provider (open.web.id)

Profile: Andy Chantrill
Company: open.web.id

Opens: 09 November 2007
Closes: 20 January 2008
Prize value: US$250.00

Details:

OpenID (on Wikipedia) is a relatively new and exciting technology that promises to solve (or at least improve upon) many of the social and technical problems that currently exist around online authentication and identity management.

We will shortly be launching a new OpenID service provider under the brand “open.web.id” (it is a real domain name). Therefore, our users will be identifying themselves around the web as https://andy.open.web.id/, https://mary.open.web.id/, etc.

Our service will be free and shall be differentiated by high quality security. For instance, we will employ client based X509 certificate authentication, such that the user agent (browser) does the authentication on behalf of the user without the need for passwords, thereby removing the possibility of phishing attacks.

One other important aspect of our service is our ethical policy that guarantees no information about our users identities or their behaviour will either be gleaned or shared with any third party, and our log files will be regularly anonomised. This kind of sensitivity toward issues of privacy will always be utmost in our minds and at the core of all our services.

We are therefore seeking a logo that reflects our belief in using technology responsibly and ethically. We would like our eventual logo to contain the text “open.web.id” and a symbol. We’d like this symbol to work independently of the text for use in small spaces. I am also interested in the possibility of leveraging the purposefulness of our domain name and prepending the logo text with a verb for marketing purposes, e.g. “got.open.web.id/?”.

The primary usage for our logo will be online and in the future we will use it to brand hardware security devices (USB dongles).

The winning logo will be the one that best conveys an understanding of the OpenID technology platform and our own ethical philosophy.

Be innovative, make it exciting, and good luck!

P.S. Did you know that every Estonian citizen has been issued with their very own OpenID!

- Andy.

What a fantastic client! Much praise to Plaggypig, I’m very impressed. It is so hard to find clients with scruples these days, but LS has led us to this one. And congrats to the winner(s).

By RetroMetro/Steve over 4 years ago

Now that’s a praise-worthy contest holder. Good on ya, Andy! And congrats to the two winners…

By EmLiam over 4 years ago

Congratulations to both logomanic and andre/endhiq, and tap on the back to the contest holder for being generous…! Cheers. :)

By onesummer over 4 years ago

congrats, logomaniac

By Leah over 4 years ago

Sincere congratulations to both Jenn and Andre! Andy…you are a fair and generous person. Bravo to you, too :-)

By plaggypig over 4 years ago

I am pleased to announce that WE HAVE A WINNER! – Congratulations go to Logomanic!

I chose this logo because it speaks about the notion of human identity and how we value it, using the mask to depict the need for privacy. We hope that this logo will serve to remind our users of our fundamental belief that nobody but themselves should have the right to own or otherwise exploit their identity.

I am also awarding andre/endhiq a special cash prize of $150.00 as a gesture of good will for introducing the winning concept of the mask into the competition – it was a stroke of genius, thank you.

Finally, I would like to say to all those who entered that I spent a great deal of time and thought going through your entries and I was very pleased with what I saw – thank you to everyone who participated.

- Andy.

Andy, that’s awesome and very cool of you. Andre…thanks for explaining. You did a terrific job with your last entries! Good luck to all :-)

By plaggypig over 4 years ago

andre/endhiq – I apologise for not replying to your query sooner – I have just been so busy recently that I completely forgot to get back to you. I also really appreciate your effort to revise your entry given such short notice before the deadline.

I can assure you that if another persons entry containing the mask concept is selected as the winner then you will be compensated with a special honorary prize. It was not my intention to play off entrants against one another, but I shall nevertheless ensure that fairness prevails in the end.

I have gone through all of the entries now, and there are about half a dozen or so that are in my list of favourites. I am going to sleep on it, go through them again thoroughly in the morning, and then make my final decision by early evening time.

By andre / endhiq over 4 years ago

@Leah, don’t be missunderstand, I have to try to follow up him.I just know that my concept still stands for favorite just two days ago (look CH’s comment). Before that (1 month ago) i have try to contact him, that i don’t understands with his comment that he wants 3D representation and offered him to send my revise privately first, but he don’t reply me. And then i try to revise in 2 entries (after logomanic’ design) in web 2.0 style (i interpret his suggestion about 3d with this) also i try with other concept and then send him email. He reply my email that what he mean 3d representation is in realistic face and mask (1 day after) .So i only one day to follow his suggestion to revise.

The competition has now ended, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody that entered. I am very impressed with the overall quality of your submissions – the creativity and enthusiasm shown has been wonderful.

I have started to go through the logo submissions, giving consideration to each and every one – I can say that it’s going to be a tough choice deliberating amongst so many great designs.

I hope to announce a winner on Sunday evening – so watch this space :)

By Leah over 4 years ago

I totally agree with Steve’s comments. And I commend Hotch for retracting his submission. To be fair to Hotch and Logomanic though, a great deal of time had passed since Andre submitted his original concept and it appeared that he wasn’t going to follow up. His revisions came after the other two had picked up on the concept.

By tudjuhdosa over 4 years ago

andre/endhiq has just sent me a message: “my open id concept was stolen pal” then i said, “Good artists copy, great artists steal.” :) – absolutely stolen from Pirates of Silicon Valley

this entry is open-ed to be pirated ;p

@andre/endhiq: guyon maton pak…hehe aku nulis comment ning entry-mu sing terakhir, takdukung tapi sing konsep awal. BTW, ‘gondez’ ngisorku iki sopo ndre?Jingax ik…

By RetroMetro/Steve over 4 years ago

Your stature just grew a bunch in my book Robert:) And I agree andre – your’s is a somewhat unexpected approach in this context (as attested to by the contest holder himself) and as such I feel you have some claim to it. Had it been in the brief from the start, or been a much more obvious way to go, I would have expected others to follow along and may have done so myself. Cheers all!

By andre / endhiq over 4 years ago

Thanks Retro/ Metro Steve, as the original “conceptor” of mask concept i have sent email to CH about that but i don’t know why he didn’t reply my email.

That would be different if CH in the first brief tell to the designer that he wants (if own his idea) “open mask concept”. So the designer get directly to there.

By Hotch over 4 years ago

Your absolutely right RetroMetro/Steve! I’ve now retracted my logo from this competition. I was wrong to have developed another designer’s idea for my own gain. I’m sorry for having crossed that line.

By RetroMetro/Steve over 4 years ago

@plaggypig – I’m not sure it’s fair to play two (three?) designs off against one another. I would work with the originator of the concept first to see if they can nail it for you (that could be dialogued in the individual feedback field rather than here, which suggests to the community that they take a run at it too). I can appreciate that you want to get the most bang-for-your-buck, but it really is unfair to the originator of the concept…Cheers, and no offense intended to anyone:)

By plaggypig over 4 years ago

This new entry has caught my eye – it’s definitely on the right track, but I think it’s slightly too detailed – I’d like to see it simplified and perhaps made to look slightly less realistic. I’m sorry if this sounds vague, I just can’t quite put my finger on it :-)

By plaggypig over 4 years ago

My favourite logo so far involves this concept of a mask. However, I think its implementation could be greatly improved – I have previously suggested that it could be reworked into a 3D representation, such that it clearly depicts a face and a mask – is it possible for you to do this?

I also like the idea behind this logo However, it would be better to incorporate a repeating pattern that is slightly more relevant than arrows, or perhaps try out a non-repeating pattern that represents the process of using openid authentication?

Some other mentions go to this logo involving a key – again, perhaps it would work better in a 3D isometric variation? I’m also fond of this symbol, although I wish it were less generic and more relevant to the technological concept underpinning open.web.id.

There are still a few days remaining, so please bear in mind my suggestions and keep your entries coming in :-)

By plaggypig over 4 years ago

I’ve still not been blown over – less than a week to go – keep your entries coming in!

By onesummer over 4 years ago

awesome. you should maybe compare the entries from this point on versus the previous ones and see how much of a difference the prize money increase makes. good call on the increase :)

By Digger over 4 years ago

Prizemoney increased to $250, extended to 20th January

By plaggypig over 4 years ago

onesummer – your wish is my command! The prize amount has been increased to $250. You may also notice that we have extended the competition deadline until the 20th of January; to give any newcomers an opportunity to get their entries in. I promise that no further extensions will be given to this deadline now – a winner will definitely be chosen on the 20th January!

Good luck to all!

By onesummer over 4 years ago

any chance you will possibly increase the price amount? You’re more likely to get better concepts entered if you do. I understand that you may be on a budget, but offering the bare minimum in prize amount doesn’t usually result in the “best” of entries. Just a suggestion :)

By plaggypig over 4 years ago

As you may have noticed, the competition deadline has been extended until 20th December.

I want to offer some feedback on the entries that have been submitted so far.

I’ve had a look at all of the submissions and I wanted to pick out a couple that have caught my eye and make a brief comment about why I like them.

The mask in this logo is a very neat idea and is something that had not occured to me when I was brainstorming my own ideas. Perhaps the implementation could be altered slightly so that the mask is more clearly depicted – I wouldn’t have known it was a mask on first glance without the description. Maybe some perspective of depth is needed for this to work effectively?

The interlocking rings in this logo is a simple concept that to me symbolises the integration of services. If you know anything about OpenID then you’ll know that one of its interesting abilities is attribute exchange :-)

So now there is just over two weeks remaining before I decide upon a winner – the competition is still wide open, so get thinking and designing :-)

By andre / endhiq over 4 years ago

Thanks for your quick feedback Andy.Hope you get the best here.:)

By plaggypig over 4 years ago

andre/endhiq: Yup, it is an Indonesian domain name. “web.id” is a second level domain intended to be used for any purpose – including foreign registration, whereas other .id domains are restricted for use by Indonesian residents and businesses.

Thanks for your submissions!

Only three days to go until the deadline..

By andre / endhiq over 4 years ago

@ Andy Chantrill, just curious. Is it open.web.id real domain? Any relation with indonesia domain (.ID)?

By plaggypig over 4 years ago

I’d like to thank all of the entrants who have submitted designs so far – I am surprised and delighted to see over a dozen quality submissions on the first day alone, and it’s also great to see people voting on their favourite designs and commenting on them – what fun!

I have received a question from one entrant requesting a general opinion on my preferred design style, and so in the interests of fairness to you all I shall post a brief answer here.

I’ll just restate that I would like to see a strong symbolic relationship between the nature of our service and the concept of our logo. My advice is to think about the theme of identity and see where that leads to.

Let me also say that I am not prejudging any of the designs, and at the end of the competition all of the designs will be given equal consideration. I am also wary that I should not spend time looking at the designs until we reach the competition deadline.
