Plain English Power

Profile: Rachel McAlpine
Company: Contented

Opens: 07 May 2008
Closes: 28 May 2008
Prize value: US$250.00

Details:

Help us drum up enthusiasm for the power of plain English. Guidelines follow, but feel free – if your idea is better, we want to see it!

Text: “Plain English Power”. No tagline.

Style: clear, strong, confident, accessible. Not boring! Could even be classy, classic or elegant. For obvious reasons, the text must be ultra-legible, whether large or small. Text rules but feel free to include an icon. I prefer a rectangular shape. Consider sturdy, dark, interesting colours. Avoid blue and anything cute. Must look good when people print web pages in black and white.

Plain English Power = “I get it!” Readers get a sense of control; writers are freed to tell it like it is; and organisations can save unbelievable amounts of time and money.

Our audience includes members of the public struggling to understand an official document. Politicians need to be impressed. And we also want to reach technical writers, journalists, editors, teachers, academics and other professionals.

We are a not-for-profit citizens group that promotes the use of plain English in New Zealand. We will push for legislation making plain English mandatory for certain documents, e.g. information about benefits. Likely name: Plain English Supporters Network. (No connection with my own company.)

We’ll use the logo on web sites, slide presentations, stationery and tee-shirts. Winning logo must be vector format so we can use it very large or tiny.

Writing very clearly there Digger! I was tickled pink to find out about Logosauce. Our new lobby group has no funds at all, so I figured a good way to kick start the project was to pay for the logo and the web site myself. Logosauce makes that possible, while giving the committee a choice. I’m fascinated by the entries that have already rolled in. Great stuff! I think designers are saints because as soon as you produce something, the client finds fault. But that’s because it is so much easier to recognise what you want than to describe what you want. (Yes, Webstock rocks, no doubt about it.)

Hey Rachel

Nice to see you’ve joined Logosauce Rachel. Your new brand sounds interesting. Wish you well with the comp. P.S I met Rachel at Webstock 08 (NZ’s super cool web conference held in Wellington, NZ each year) where Rachel was presenting on writing (..god I hope this writing is ok!)
