ITR
Profile: Mark Thompson
Company: AnalogX
Opens: 07 May 2008
Closes: 07 June 2008
Prize value: US$300.00
Details:
After an excellent experience with the first competition, I’m back with a new one! As with my previous one, I will be also be awarding a 2nd place of $200 and 3rd place of $100, so you have three more chances to win. ;) As usual, the plan is to first find a great logo, and then based on that a new look and feel for the website (ideally with the winner of the comp). The website is:
Feel free to check out the site to get a feel for what it does – but the quick description is that it monitors performance of a variety of computers around the Internet, and then gives a score (from 0 to 100) of how well everything is doing.
The site is a reference/resource type of site, so I would like the logo to be professional and clean. It will only be used on the website, so how it looks in print, etc is not important with this site. It also would be good if the logo also works at a small size (such as an .ico) so it can be used for the bookmark and also for watermarks on images.

Winner chosen
Comments:
I’m getting feedback from people, and will announce the winners by the end of the week! :)
Ok, here’s my final notes, not a whole lot of time left, but I thought I would at least highlight some of the latest submissions that stood out to me for one reason or another:
dariopasqualini On the tip of the ITR, but I like the incorporation of the red/yellow/green, and the sort of pixelish blocks for the actual logo. Looks good.
kokonut Another excellent variation, I like the almost ‘atomic’ look that it has – one of my favorites.
intrepidguppy While this is pretty simple, it has a nice feel to it and once again incorporates the colors well.
PUTSCHMAN This is a strange one, it has a much more raw feel than some of the other ones, but I like the stark contrast between the red lines and the black center. Interesting…
oli.burgess Haha! I got a kick out of this one, and I can pretty easily imagine a theme for the site using this. Clever way of incorporating the whole ‘traffic’ concept.
Once the competition completes, I’ll pick around 10 of the top logos (based on my preference and also Score), send them around to all my friends and get their opinions, and from that select the top 3. I’ll wait to make the list until the competition is done, so if you’ve been holding off on submitting something, make sure to get it in… :)
Here are my thoughts on the next round of submissions – definitely some cool ones, and as always, it’s going to be tough deciding which ones win. :)
Kariboo I like both this one as well as the version with the circle – for whatever reason this one ‘pops’ a bit more than the other one. I like the use of color, the kind of minimal feel that it has…
kokonut Excellent variation of the earlier logo – still has the nice look of the balls, but with the addition of the circle it gives it more of a ‘network’ sense, as well as a greater sense of motion. Very nice.
bamba The changes really help on this one, while I liked the original, I prefer this one – the cleaner break on where the R comes back into the T looks good, and a much better choice of typeface. I also prefer the colors on this one.
ian2180 This is the first one (for me) the incorporates a bit of the graph feel that works. I like the simple lines and the slight color fade on the progressive lines.
Big brother vibe, was exactly my idea tho! ;) so im glad that it shows, no matter if its doesnt fit your needs. Thanks for the review!
Ok, so here are my comments on the first batch of submissions – I picked out a couple that stand out to me in particular, and give some details about what I like about them. Hopefully this will be helpful in coming up with new ideas or refining existing ones! Here goes:
kokonut This one is pretty cool – very simple, but still gets across the different states of the site. I like the treatment around the edge to give it a more anime look, and the shadow to give it depth. Very nice.
Logoist I really like the exploding dots off of the beginning – it gives it a high tech feel, it also gives the impression that it’s on a sphere (or at least it does to me), so a bit of a global feel. The font/colors/kerning work really well with logo as well, and I could see this coming together to make a really clean an interesting web design as well.
Jimholio I think this logo has a bit too much of a big brother vibe to it for me, but I did get a kick out of it. :)
ecodezign Neat combination of the ITR that also gives a sense of direction, very clever.
Bamba Another nice combination of the ITR letters…
Overall very cool – I’m not sure from a branding standpoint if I would rather have something more abstract that has more of a connection to what the site does (such as the first two on my list), or if I like the focus more on the name and abbreviation that the last two do.

Ok, the voting is done and the results are in… As with before, I would like to thank everyone that submitted logos – I wish you all could win, there some very cool and creative logos, but ultimately there has to be one winner, and in this case it is:
oli.burgess
The general consensus was that the logo was a bit more fun and accessible, having more of a connection to the ‘traffic’ side of the site.
2nd place is:
Kariboo
And finally:
ecodezign
One thing that is true of all these logos is that I think they all lend themselves to a site designs, it’s very easy to see how a website could be built around the design aesthetic that these all have.
Thanks again to everyone who participated in this competition, and hopefully you’ll keep an eye out for my next one! ;)
