Profile: Paul Culligan
Company:

Opens: 03 November 2008
Closes: 05 December 2008
Prize value: US$225.00

Details:

the idea is very simple; I am a freelance English language teacher from the UK in Singapore and I plan to set up a website to advertise my services – English language classes that cover both general English and exam classes (TOEFL, IELTS, SATS etc).

The logo will be used on my website and business cards (the main front for the logo) but I will eventually use it on notebooks and pens (corporate gifts).

My students are professional adults (not your average high-school student!) who are bank managers, IT professionals etc. from all over Asia. As such, the logo must be professional, clean and have a hint of ‘class’ about it. It MUST convey a strong sense of professionalism; it must scream I am not a backpacking teacher but one who has qualifications and over a decade of teaching experience.

I am open to different design styles but I prefer a classic look; similar to the competition run by albatros (the translation company) on this website.

I would like to use just the initials, PJCC, in a monogram form. To have them linked somehow, something similar to caran d’ache’s circular logo. Or, simply the Daimler logo, the old one, from the Jaguar group.

In addition, i would like to have a stylized oak tree (for the UK) and traveller’s palm (for Singapore) linked to the logo. I have seen a couple of logos that use oak trees, such as www.tysonrobinson.com.

One of my favourite logos is the pan pacific hotel’s logo. If, you can combine the oak tree, traveller’s palm with the initials PJCC then that’d be perfect!!! so i have two things in mind, either a circular logo, somehow linked to the trees, or a pjcc in the daimler way which would have the trees on the side or top.

Colour is now upto you, i can adapt it later.

Thanks for your comments. I’m only raising a debate whether some clients are giving themselves too much license in controlling the design process. I can appreciate their drive and enthusiasm. However, this brief has become a little too specific to run around with creative ideas. Great that you found the design that fits your bill! No doubt you’ll be happy with that. Professionalism first and foremost.

to neonloony, also please appreciate that the client is also very busy and hasn’t had time to submit comments to every design (about to happen) for this competition – which runs for a long time for that very reason – almost a month left I believe and started merely 3 days ago. Where a design has caught my eye, i have jumped on it and commented quickly (either in private or publicly) . I am rarely in front of a computer for more than 10 minutes a day. I would appreciate the work being done but I would also appreciate a more professional attitude.

This brief is a classic example of a client who loves to run the entire design process. I don’t mind sharing their views and ideas. What the client wants, he gets. That’s fine. But one should not turn a blind eye to other alternatives, as there’s an ample of opportunities out there. He’s literally mentoring ’mosermanique’s’ design on every last detail. It’s appreciated that he’s getting good feedback. What about the rest of us? Are we not worth the effort. This competition is taking the mickey! I’m not submitting more entries to this one.

Thank you all for your designs and rapid response. However, I feel the designs are heading down a path that is not what I am looking for. As such, I am changing my brief somewhat to make it more specific.
