Competitions
Planet Porsche !
Profile: Ken Smiley
Company: K-Man Group LLC
Opens: 20 January 2009
Closes: 16 February 2009
Prize value: US$350.00
Details:
We are bringing together a set of Porsche enthusiast websites under a single domain of PlanetPorsche.Net, some of those sites are CaymanClub.Net, BoxsterBoard.com and PanameraPit.com so you can look at those to get a feel for the existing style.
We need a brand new logo for Planet Porsche, hence this competition.
The logo must work well for the website (we intend to keep the color theme at caymanclub.net so keep that in mind) and must also work well in print, on hats, t-shirts, etc. There can be NO elements from any Porsche trademark used in your design as we are independent from Porsche.
If you have any questions just ask me, this is our first attempt at using logosauce but it came recommended from one of our members who used it succsessfully. Apologies for the short time frame but we have to get a new logo in time for our opening in February. We bumped up the price we are willing to pay some in hopes of attracting more submissions.
- Primary objective – to be used to represent our online Porsche enthusiast forums and community on the web, in print, etc.
- Target Audience – mostly men 30-70 who are enthusiastic about Porsche and Porsche cars.
- Target currently thinks – They like our existing sites and existing logos, they expect excellence and quality
- Like them to think – I want them to see the logo and think “Oh I gotta have that on a shirt, hat, jacket, etc.”
- Single Idea – It visually represents that we are covering all things Porsche for Porsche enthusiasts
- Inhibiting factors – Only one I can think of is this will be a NEW brand, and of course we cannot use any elements for existing Porsche designs or we’ll get sued. :)
- Brand Values – We are a mature and respectful community of Porsche enthusiasts, not a bunch of bling-bling types trying to show off, but rather members with a passion for Porsche interacting helping others with a similar passion.
- Appropriate Tone? – Unsure on this one, other than something professional, something catchy visually, something that could work with or without words adjacent to it, something flexible.
The rest I think I’ve covered above.
Hope that helps!

I’d like to thank everyone who participated. We took the top 10 and put them up for voting among our members, and 3 rose to the top, separated by only a couple of votes each. I will be contacting all 3 authors since we could only choose 1 winner we may still wish to acquire the rights to the other two logos. Thanks again to everyone for their efforts!
I just wanted to say that with a little over 17 hours left to go that there are still many logos that we consider to be very good and viable candidates and picking one winner is going to be hard. Those who don’t win, please don’t despair, as I mentioned previously we may want to offer several different logo styles in our Cafe Press online store and I would be happy to work individual deals after the contest is over with the author’s of other logos that were submitted but which did not win. We also hope to have a winner chosen within 72 hours of the contest completion, and hopefully sooner, I don’t want to hold anyone up and we will need the final artwork rather quickly anyway for our launch graphics.
Thanks for the update, Ken. No doubt you’ve put some minds at ease. You should be seeing additional entries as a result.:) Cheers.
Apologies I have been away for a few days and getting ready for another business trip. I don’t think David / Crock-et Man intended some of the things he said to come off that way, he’s normally not that way at all and he didn’t realize that some icons will show up as a do not enter sign if you aren’t logged in or it is a hidden entry, etc. While I appreciate his input, he does not have final say over what logo is chosen. We have a group of about 100 members who I have asked to give me their opinions on these logos and I have been compiling their opinions. I have another group of 8 members that will also be helping me make the final decision. Crock-et Man is not in that final group of 8 but I think he is part of that 100. Ultimately the decision rests on me so I am the one you have to please. Do not let any feedback from anyone else sway you one way or another, if you want to compete in this competition then do it. If the contest were to end today I could tell you that while I would choose 1 winner, I would likely contact at least a few other authors and ask them about acquiring their logos for use for items related to events that we hold, of hat/shirts that we will have made, etc. I’ve seen some very good stuff here and would like to ask that designers keep them coming! If you have any other questions for me just ask, I’ll do my best to respond in a timely fashion.
Having just googled croc-ket & “David O’Neal”, he pops up as a contributor of articles to the caymanclub.net site and has a user profile there. I won’t be contributing to this competition until crock-et man’s profile is deleted from Logosauce.
I’d like to know too… About Croc-of-#%$&-man…
Venom from people like that will only keep designers away. I know that for a fact bacause I personally know accounts cancelled by fellow designers based on that specific reason
One additional item, our launch slogan is “Preserve the Essence” and stems from us trying to preserve the essence of our Cayman focused site as we expand to cover more models, as well as our site is a location for preserving the essence of Porsche on the web for Porsche enthusiasts. I anticipate that we will have some shirts created with the logo on the front and the launch slogan across the back shoulder area by one of our shirt vendors. If you want to also include some catchy ways of showing that phrase feel free, but it won’t impact our decision on the main logo itself, I just know that some people like to do complete mockups showing web, shirts, hats, etc. ways in which the logo can be used.
I received an email with a concern about the use of “Porsche” in the logo since Porsche is obviously a trademark of Porsche. First let me state that we have a legal agreement with Porsche to use the domain names we are using and Second, Porsche lost some cases where they went after domains like PorscheParts.com etc. because those entities coupled another word with Porsche and were not trying to impersonate Porsche, there was no likelihood of confusion. Hence our request not to use any colors or elements of the actual Porsche logo to avoid any possibility of confusion. Rest assured that we have the appropriate agreement in place with Porsche’s legal team to allow us to use the domain name as we agreed that we were not trying to steal or impersonate any of their IP. Hope that helps put anyone at ease that may have had any concerns. Thanks in advance to those who already submitted, looking good!

Congrats to Ken and Revotype. I think the winning logo is simply brilliant. The “9” conjures up immediate 911 visions. Well done.
