Jordan Photography - Raw Class
Profile: Craig Baker
Company: Jordan Photography
Opens: 07 February 2010
Closes: 07 March 2010
Prize value: US$260.00
Details:
My wife and I are professional wedding photographers (Jordan Photography).
We currently have our business name as our logo on our website (http://www.jordanphotography.com.au/weddings/index2.php) but are looking to compliment it with an image that would express who we are and become a signature whereby clients and future clients would easily associate with us. We are looking to incorporate this with our current logo and use it on our website, stationary, albums and other marketing material. We have come up with two words that describe the perfect contrast in our two personalities and what we bring to the table for each other and for our clients.
The two words are: RAW and CLASS
Raw represents my personality, being fun, candid, dependable, strong, real, slightly rough around the edges but honest and full of integrity and passion. Class represents my wife, refined, eloquent, upmarket, intelligent and organised (also fun and full of passion). If I were to represent the contrast in different ways I would use the following examples:
- Billabong vs. Versace - Diesel vs. YveSaintLaurent - Cinema vs. theatre/opera - Camping under the stars vs. Five Star hotel and resort
We have come up with the idea of a rock to represent RAW and a diamond ring or just a diamond to represent CLASS and need different ideas of representing this intertwined. We are open to other objects or images that represent these two words, but have a strong preference for rock and ring/diamond. (ps. No frilly flowery bits please – prefer clean and edgy)
Also as Christian photographers, we see a lot of significance in the image of a rock representing our solid foundation and dependable faith in Jesus as well as the diamond ring as a bride of Christ and the wedding industry. It would also be really cool if we could take the ring or diamond component of the logo and etch it onto rock.
You can view a short video of us shooting at a wedding on our blog – http://www.jordanphotography.com.au/jpblog/?p=339 and while you’re there you can check out the other images and get a feel for the style of imagery we like to capture.
Our wedding couples are typically between the ages of 20-35, have a comfortable income and/or come from comfortable income families and/or appreciate fine photography and design. They value the experience as much as the images and know how to have fun.
Key words that have been used to describe Jordan Photography: · relaxed · fresh · fun · intimate · unique · evoking emotion · heartfelt · inspirational · spontaneous
Other details: · design should be suitable for color or black & white print · logo will be used everywhere · We don’t like square edges we prefer flow · Clean, classy and creative design for an upmarket clientele but not snobby – very important · We are not into frilly bits · Require vector, full scalable complete file as well as layered PSD files.
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with – there are some extremely talented designers here. We will be checking and leaving feedback so don’t hesitate to ask questions.
Thanks in advance!

Information about some of our favorites … Let this help but not constrain inspiration for further entries. New designs and/or modifications to designs are still encouraged.
So here it is – a morsel of information about some of our favorite designs to date. From feedback received we understand that some of our requirements have been considered vague by some designers thus this is an attempt to bring further clarity. We don’t want to see any copying but hope that this may clarify for some a new idea or concept they were unsure about pursuing. In no specific order …

This one captures raw with what appears like plants and foliage and the dominant feature and feel is professional and class. A wonderfully original concept and presented both clean and in a way it clear that it would work as a solid color for embossing. If anything lets this entry down it is the level of detail that complicates it and the pattern in the center not communicating anything clear. No doubt Estween will work up a solution to those challenges – after all he is on fire :-)

Simple and stylish this entry captures raw and creative with a play on the company initials while maintaining a sleek and clean classy presentation. Will Kalle try and top this one with another concept – we wait and see :-)

Santiago’s first entry has something about it that makes us just keep going back to look again. It captures raw and class wonderfully – before we even mentioned it, the design captured the concept of ‘class emerging from raw’. The creative ‘splat’ represents the creative fun experience we hope our clients experience. An original concept with a very clean and professional look … but we can’t help but wonder what else this logo master has up his sleeve :-)

This one caught me a little by surprise. Loved the concept at first glance. It was clean & creative – the very subtle reference to JP is hard to pick but there. The design incorporated the company name in its body and it almost looked like a painters palette with a brush. The only thing that could hold this design back is, presenting without the Company name, it is quite vague … until we stamp the icon on the minds of our clients and target market – it might leave a few people with question marks wondering what or who it represents. Wonderfully fresh and innovative – full credit to Alison for this distinctive concept :-)

Esters persistence pays off :-) A great example of listening to and implementing feedback – this entry captures raw and class in a distinctive icon. To us the design is contemporary and presents professionally. The introduced loose J has a free and flowing element while still looking classy and the circle speaks to raw creativity.
There is a sixth one but we can only see it if we are logged in – so we presume the designer wants to keep this one hidden to prevent copy of concept or something like that. What we will say about it is that, as with all our other favorites this would work if blind embossed. It has an over-all professional, clean and classy feel with an neat (and not overbearing) element of creative striving that brings the raw element into the design.
There are other designs & designers not far from being added to our favorites and the individual feedback we are giving on designs might get them over the line. No doubt there will be modifications and new concepts that will blow us away in the last few days so best of luck to all – and to all – Thank you for the time and effort you have put towards Reading, Researching, Brainstorming, Conceptualizing, Testing, Designing & Refining for each entry. We appreciate it!
FULL DISCLOSURE – We know a designer who has submitted an entry in this competition. RedemptionDesign who submitted entry http://www.logosauce.com/profiles/8735 has been made aware that he has NO chance of winning this competition based on the rules.
My wife and I, as CH’s, are excited and impressed at the standard of entries from here and want to assure all designers that we will be awarding a winner within the 14day period post competition close … and that no designs from this designer will be considered in that assessment. We will comment on his designs (as we are trying to do for all designers) as it may be helpful for others.
Again, our heart felt thanks to all the designers who have, or haven’t yet but intend to submit in this competition. There is a wonderful depth of talent and community on this site that we both appreciate and feel should be commended. As creative professional ourselves we understand to some extent the effort and time that designers put in to every submission and appreciate all entrants in this competition.
Coming soon …. our favorite 5-10 thus far – and what we like about them.
Hi Everyone!
Wow things are hotting up now. There are some amazing designs filtering through and we are very excited at how this competition is unfolding. We know that the information and the relationship between ‘raw’ & ‘class’ has been hard to nail down. As you can see below Joshua (LEP) has asked some questions to draw clearer information out. Props to Joshua – he seems to draw information out well :-) For those that have watched our promo video I will explain the ‘raw’ ‘class’ I see in that:
If you have watched the video you would have seen Di and I having a lot of fun, perhaps a little craziness and adventure (we are on each others shoulders, we poke our tongues out at each other, climb trees, and crack up often), where as the resulting images ‘I hope’ looked classy, elegant, professional. The dominant factor modern, creative, simple, professional. The experience and the way we work is where I see ‘raw’ (it is not polished, conservative, constrained, or ordered. It flows but may not be as ‘staid’ or ‘boring’ as a client may have expected to get in the resulting images).
So to put it another way Class, Beauty, Elegance emerge out of the experience which is – well – a little less polished, free flowing fun and adventure. The lasting impression we hope to leave and the predominant factor is the professional classy images they are left with but the experience they had while we were capturing the images we hope leaves them with a happy smile on their face … and perhaps a bit of amazement that having that much relaxed fun could result in such incredible images.
I hope this has helped any that were still wondering how all this ‘raw class’ fit in.

I wasn’t expecting you to pick any designs from this comp. It’s best you don’t at this point. Continue doing what your doing, cause your doing a great job with feedback.
I guess what I was looking for was pretty much what you gave me. I’ve been very caught up in the raw/class thing and have seen some fantastic logos. You are def. going to get a great piece from this comp.
I certainly don’t want you to think this comp. is a waste of my time. I’m terribly sorry if that’s how it sounded. My point was more to the fact that It’s nice to hear direction. Instead of shooting in the dark for the most part each time I post a new design. I just didn’t want to waste time with designs that wouldn’t work from the get go. Trust me I’m still brainstorming and can’t let go of this challenging competition. I like the work behind this one.
Thanks again for getting back to me and I’m sure I could speak for everyone, thanks for the great feedback.
Hi LEP,
Thanks for your encouragment and praise about us being good contest holders …. but it seems we are also very talented at frustrating you as well :( We will try to address your concerns and questions but if you honestly feel that it is all too vague and that you are wasting time – then please don’t feel obiligated to continue. We don’t want to waste anyones time.
Thank you for reading our comments, I think by doing so you will have far more insight. I’m surprised that while doing this you have still not seen any more than the direction of raw and class. These two elements will be predominant as they are a theme that we are hoping to have emerge – so we say it a lot (especially where a designer has captured one but not both of these elements through our eyes). I’m surprised you have not seen ‘free’, ‘flowing’, ‘expressing creativity’ which are terms I remember sharing in comments.
The contradiction of clean and simple V’s too corporate…. is it perhaps a balance (not a contradiction) we are looking for. When we use the term too corporate you could interperate this way – ‘an excellent clean design that could work almost anywhere for any business, but it just feels too stuffy and/or cold … perhaps it feels too constricted and not free enough for what we are looking for’. We honestly may not express ourselves very well but some people seem to be getting it.
Other areas or symbols of interest to us: we love freedom | we love flow | we love expression | we are creative There are some cool examples of creative expression that flow with freedom in the Stephen Dohring Photography competition. I hate giving a specific example because I don’t want all designers to go and start working on only initials as the design concept … but here – http://www.logosauce.com/logos/49429. Xaos did a lovely free open flowing design in the recent Law in motion http://www.logosauce.com/logos/72950. While initials and script fonts breed this concept it can be achieved without script fonts and sometimes without initials being used.
What about colors? If you look at our website you will realise that neutral works best. Yes we are open to color – but no we don’t have a color scheme in mind. If you nail the design ‘in our eyes’ but the color is off we will ask you to change the color.
abstract V’s realistic? Clever people will get it straight away but some will ask what it means. If we look at the design and don’t get it, especially if you have left some info with your design then it might be just a bit too abstract. Your first entry in this comp – I got it! I saw the rock and I saw the diamond – I knew where you were going with it.
What do we want to see? We want to see the essence of ‘us’ expressed. It is hard to get to know us over the internet but we have provided links to our website (has an about page) – and to our blog video showing us in action shooting a wedding (blog also has another about page)
What don’t we want to see: Now this I have gathered just from our brief and feedback …. we don’t want to see: ~ Frilly bits ~ Too much intricate detail ~ Font used to express raw ~ We don’t like square edges and blocky designs ~ We don’t want things that can’t work as a single color ~ We don’t want typical or cliche ~ :-) we don’t want too corporate (see above for interpretation) ~ We don’t want too cluttered ~ We don’t want too stuffy or constricted (by interpretation we are getting a lot of circles .. this was not by specification)
We hope this helps but we seriously don’t want to be wasting anyones time – so if you find it too broad or hard to continue we are fine with that.
As I have said before we appreciate everyones efforts so far – there is some amazing work up there! We don’t want to be ultra specific because there have been some creative takes on our spec that we love and would never have thought of. We don’t want to squash this freedom.
Perhaps some more ideas of where you would like the designers to go. Your feedback has been fantastic, your another great contest leader. Wish there were more like you. Anyway, I’ve read a lot of your comments and I see some things that might conflict one another. Statements that you like the simplicity of a design but then in another comment that you don’t like the corporate simplicity. Not quite sure what you mean by corporate. Anyway, like I said, your feedback has been great, but you haven’t offered much for direction except for raw and class, ie the diamond and stone.
Are there other areas of interest to you two? Symbols of interest? A certain style of design that you like? (ie Apple, web 2.0, etc. does not matter whether it’s photo related or not). What about colors? How abstract do you want the design? How realistic? What do you not want to see?
This could help all of us. I’d love to participate in this, but it is so open ended at the moment that I’m not going to continue to just take a shot in the dark and waste time. Thanks!
We want to say thank you for the entries so far – it is exciting to see where different ideas are leading and developing. We love the creativity and variety that comes from this pool of professionals!! Thank you also for listening and applying points from our feedback. If you want to know anything don’t hesitate to ask us.
Now with feedback in mind, we just thought of an angle that some may want to try. Not easy but …. The two photographers that make up this team are Craig & Diana. If you can think of a creative and very subtle way to incorporate CD initials into the icon design could add a dimension of secretly revealing who we are. Of course the icon still needs to be clean and representing who we are as per the competition details above – and the CD must not be obvious.
Thanks again – and good luck to all
Ah! Great! That helps a lot.
Hi LEP – thanks for asking for the clarification. No it doesn’t need to be a stone and diamond – feel free to interpret other ways (this is just a first impression and thought it might guide rather than constrain). This creative group is amazing and we appreciate the variety of interpretation. What ever icon can incorporate ruggedness and class is going to be good – anything that can also say creativity, inspiration and fresh – would be shear brilliance!!!
Do want a stone and diamond to feel the ruggedness and class? Or can we interpret that in other ways? Need some clarification.
Just to clarify Raw + Class are the impression we are looking for in an image/icon – this is not a tag line or slogan for the company. Thanks for participating – we are looking forward to see what creative ideas come from this talented pool of designers!!
Any questions just let us know :-)
