The people who designed this was the same team who designed the Athens Olympics logo. I was abit taken aback when I first saw this on their official website. But now I have to say it has grown on me. The whole concept and colours used is on a totally different tangent than your ‘average’ olympics trademark. Give it some time people and you’ll see what I mean. Overall, its breaking barriers and I’m liking it.

It was only when it pointed out to me that I saw the 2012 in it! Its a mess and makes me embarrassed to be British! I don’t think the designers have any clue about what appeals to young people.

I think they are trying to appeal to ‘yoof culture’. It’s not doing anything for me I’m afraid, but hey I am nearly 30.

I’m with you Seraph. I have not long passed the mid 30’s so maybe that’s why it’s not doing anything for me. I see the word “zoo” & the “R” for rusty rather than 2012. I guess it is one of those logos that will grow on you though. They should LogoSource the next Olympic logo. logoSource is full of talented designers.

I’m sorry, but this logo is awful. What a shame to pick such trash. I know that other olympic logos in the past have not been well-received, but this one is the worst of the worst.
I like Marcos’ version much better.

I couldn’t read it at first. although the choice to choose a logo that is different and fresh can be commended. The visual language of eighties New York ‘New wave’ has nothing to do with London at all. This style graphics may be popular due to fashion trends at the moment but in five years time this style will be tired to say the least.

i can’t look at it for longer that 10 seconds, not out of horror, but genuinely because the pink/yellow/white colour scheme blinds me, i get spots in my eyes, which is bad. very bad.
they seem to have had an idea and totally ran out of control with it, forgetting the core principals of what needs to be in a logo so that is viewable to all people.

As a Londoner I feel so ashamed that the people responsible put this logo design forward to represent London 2012 Olympics. Its ironic really because the London Olympic BID Logo was very nice indeed and as a consequence I thought the Olympic Logo would follow suit, sadly its a great disappointment. What I can’t understand is the UK has some of the best design consultancies in the world responsible for a lot of products advertised world wide and yet the London Olympic Committee put this design forward. Apparently, this design is suppose to reflect current youth culture in britain today which is the people of tommorrow who will evnentually be running the country. One final note thou, in fareness this design disaster in my humble opinion is no reflection on the games itself, although over budget, it promises to be the best Olympic games so far apparently, and thats quite an achievement if it happens considering theres little space available in comparison to other big cities. Japan is Currently exporting to London the Javelin Olympic – BULLET Trains. So you get an idea of the overall quality London is aiming for 2012. :-)

Although I disliked it when it was first released, I have to admit it has grown on me. Back In February I went to a two day design conference in London. Michael Wolff, one of the founders of the brand consultancy behind the logo, Wolff Olins was one of the speakers. Although he left the business in 1983, I still believe his ideas and values are still very much present in the company. He’s amazingly inspirational and his ideologies regarding design are spot on. Why create and very mediocre logo when it can be something different, challenging and risk taking? This is what the 2012 logo adheres to. The controversy regarding the logo has made it a very well recognised brand. I do agree it could have been better, but I guess this was a risk they were willing to take, after all could have been worse the ‘0’ replaced with a ‘K’ to represent a thousand – 2K12.
Isn’t it funny how often a controversial logo from the past grows on you overtime. Does this tell us something about logos and brands? We all love logos as works or art – but at the end of the day aren’t they just representations of a brand, particularly for consumers. It’s the brand they know, love, detest, can’t live without – not the logo.

NOTE: Logosauce/Digger has had nothing to do with this logo design – but because there has been a lot of controversy about this design – I wanted to list it and get everyones feedback.
What do you think of the design?
